Beyond FIP: the role of coronavirus in multi-cat households and catteries
Overview
Feline coronavirus (FCoV) is common in multi-cat households and breeding catteries, yet many misconceptions remain about its transmission, persistence, and relationship with feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). This lecture reviews the epidemiology of FCoV, factors influencing viral shedding and transmission, interpretation of diagnostic tests, and evidence-based management strategies to reduce infection in multi cat households. Practical recommendations for infection control, kitten management, breeding decisions, and client communication will be provided to help veterinarians minimize FCoV transmission while recognizing the limits of current prevention strategies.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this lecture, participants will be able to:
- Describe the epidemiology, transmission, and shedding patterns of feline coronavirus in multi-cat environments.
- Interpret FCoV diagnostic tests and understand their strengths and limitations in clinical practice.
- Identify evidence-based strategies to reduce FCoV transmission in multi-cat households and breeding catteries.
- Develop practical recommendations for breeders and shelters regarding infection control, kitten management, and FIP risk reduction.
