Beyond FIP: the role of coronavirus in multi-cat households and catteries
Overview
Feline coronavirus (FCoV) is common in multi-cat households and breeding catteries, yet many misconceptions remain about its transmission, persistence, and relationship with feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). This lecture reviews the epidemiology of FCoV, factors influencing viral shedding and transmission, interpretation of diagnostic tests, and evidence-based management strategies to reduce infection in multi cat households. Practical recommendations for infection control, kitten management, breeding decisions, and client communication will be provided to help veterinarians minimize FCoV transmission while recognizing the limits of current prevention strategies.
