Working up the Pruritic Horse

Overview

Pruritus in the horse is usually caused by either allergies (often atopic dermatitis) or ectoparasites. Differentiation between these two main etiologies, as well as potential treatment options such as anti-pruritic medications (beyond corticosteroids) allergy testing and hyposensitization, and anti-ectoparasite strategies will be covered.

What we’ll cover:

  • How to distinguish allergic disease from ectoparasite infestations
  • A practical diagnostic approach to the pruritic horse
  • The role of allergy testing and when it should be considered
  • How hyposensitisation can support long-term management
  • Anti-pruritic treatment options beyond corticosteroids
  • Effective anti-ectoparasite strategies for equine patients
