Advances in FIP treatment, an Australia perspective (2021)

Overview

Advances in anti-viral therapy are showing that effective treatment for FIP is finally a reality. Since 2018, emerging studies have demonstrated remission rates of up to 80% using novel antiviral drugs.

While no registered commercial treatments are currently available, legal access to remdesivir—a nucleoside analogue—via BOVA’s compounding pharmacy is offering a promising option for veterinarians. Additionally, mefloquine, a human-registered antimalarial, may also have a role in FIP therapy.

In this webinar, Dr Sally Coggins of the Sydney School of Veterinary Science will:

  • Share clinical insights from current treatment trials
  • Outline commonly used protocols and dosages
  • Discuss potential side effects and how to handle treatment failures

This is a must-watch update for any vet managing feline patients with suspected or confirmed FIP.

Her current work investigates novel antiviral therapies for Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP), and she is leading ongoing clinical trials open to national recruitment.

She continues to see feline patients one day per week at Gordon Veterinary Hospital, and she also teaches as a feline medicine distance education tutor for the Centre for Veterinary Education and as an undergraduate tutor for DVM students at The University of Sydney.
