Responsible use of antibiotics in equine practice (2020)
Overview
Antibiotic resistance has, until recently, been more of a political problem than a clinical problem for equine clinicians. However, it is becoming an emerging clinical challenge with wound infections being caused by MRSA and MRSP becoming more common. In this webinar, Mark Bowen, author of BEVA’s PROTECT ME toolkit will discuss how to develop an antibiotic use policy in your practice using this framework and will discuss common clinical conditions and how they can be managed with responsible use of antibiotics. Mark Bowen is an RCVS specialist in equine internal medicine and an EBVS in veterinary sports medicine and rehabilitation. He is a past president of BEVA and developed the PROTECT ME toolkit. This was recognised through an Antibiotic Guardian award, a programme that recognised this work alongside work in human healthcare. He is a Professor of Veterinary Medicine at The University of Nottingham and works at Oakham Veterinary Hospital.
