Appropriate antimicrobial use in foals -how do we combat antimicrobial resistance? (2024)
Overview
Bacterial infections and sepsis are very common in foals and sepsis is still considered the primary cause of foal death worldwide. Treatment of many foal conditions involves the use of antimicrobial drugs. However, the development of antimicrobial resistance is a major concern, and there is increasing evidence that this problem is increasing in foals. How do we balance the need to treat an individual foal against the pressure to reduce our overall antimicrobial use? What steps can we take to improve our use of antimicrobial drugs and reduce the development of resistance? These are some of the challenging questions that we will attempt to address during the webinar!
Outline:
1. Considerations for antimicrobial use in foals
2. What constitutes appropriate antimicrobial use?
3. Antimicrobial resistance in foals
4. How can we improve our own antimicrobial stewardship?
