Meet Sherlock
Age: 5 months
Breed: British shorthair
Diagnosis: Effusive (wet) form
He was so young, I’d never heard of the condition. I’d taken him in for his eye and consistent ear problems every week for about a month. The last trip resulted in my regular vet telling me he was dying and I now had that decision to make. I refused to believe this, so I immediately started researching and found Sydney University for a trial study.
They kept my little soldier for a few days, and he survived the first bouts of treatment. I was then taught how to inject him with the drug. Now, bear in mind I am petrified of needles, but I gave it my best. I completed two and a half days of injections and couldn’t complete the last. The University team was fantastic, and although it was an hour drive, every day I left work, picked Sherlock up, and we drove to the uni for his daily injections for 84 days.
We completed his treatment and finished up an extra month on tablets to try to minimize the chances of a relapse.
We are now free of the condition for over two years, and he’s a healthy, grumpy man thanks to the treatment. He was so young, I’d never heard of the condition. I’d taken him in for his eye and consistent ear problems every week for about a month.
