Meet Mango
Age: 9 months
Breed: Domestic Medium Hair
Diagnosis: Effusive (wet) form
Hi everyone – just wanted to share some news with you ago. 2 years ago, I mentally prepared to euthanise Mango – as suggested by 2 vets. We found out from our current vet that Mango was all good to go into the observation period! No more pills! His bloodwork is close to perfect! (Phosphorus a little elevated but we’re monitoring it). I can’t even describe the rollercoaster of emotions during those 3 months, it was hectic – mostly scary. I remember searching up cat urns to buy for him… What a scary time. I wanted to share this for anyone feeling scared or worried – I was too. Stay strong, you’ve got this. Sometimes some vets don’t know what’s best. Trust your instincts. I had taken Mango to 5 different vets before I was happy that he was getting the best practice care. A vet who stays updated with current research and continues their learning. Here’s why I changed vets 4 times.
Vet 1 (my long-time vet 😢): suggested euthanasia said ‘there’s no cure’
Vet 2 (specialist animal hospital): also suggested euthanasia, said there was no point with treatment as its so expensive to diagnose
Vet 3: quoted me $20,000 (it ended up costing half including diagnostics)
Vet 4: started Mango on a very low dose even though his FIP was complicated and i wasnt going to take any chances
Vet 5: where I’m currently at. Very happy with them and they completely follow the FIP specialist’s advice (I was in contact with him via email)
This is just Mango and I’s journey, not advice to anyone. I’m just a pet parent! 😂 All cats respond to treatment differently please consult knowledgeable vets. Good luck to anyone currently on this journey.
