Sarah Heath is an esteemed RCVS and European Veterinary Specialist in Behavioural Medicine and a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (2018). With over three decades of experience, Sarah established Behavioural Referrals Veterinary Practice in 1992 after spending four years in mixed general practice.

She is an External Lecturer in small animal behavioural medicine at the University of Liverpool, where she teaches veterinary undergraduates. In 2019, Sarah earned a Postgraduate Certificate in Veterinary Education and became a Fellow of the Higher Education Authority. Additionally, she is a certified Clinical Animal Behaviourist accredited by the ASAB scheme and is registered as a Veterinary Behaviourist with the Animal Behaviour and Training Council.

Sarah’s contributions to the field include her role as a Founding Diplomate of the European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine (2002). She has a particular interest in the link between emotional and physical illnesses in dogs and cats, especially the role of pain, and advocates for recognising emotional health issues as integral to animal welfare.

Based in North West England, Sarah sees clinical cases and actively promotes the veterinary profession’s role in safeguarding the emotional wellbeing of companion animals. A prolific lecturer and educator, she speaks extensively both in the UK and internationally. Sarah has authored, co-authored, and edited several influential books on behavioural medicine.
