Formulation
All our products aim to maximise compliance and offer options to help ensure optimal animal welfare. We achieve this by keeping the animal and the owner at the forefront of our minds when developing new formulations and refining existing ones.
We always recommend that registered products should be the first choice for veterinarians. However, commercially available medications can be limited in strength or form which may lead to difficult dosing and administration.
When no suitable registered product is available, we take pride in having a large range of options available for veterinarians to help individualise the treatment of their patients. Our laboratory can obtain the necessary pharmaceutical-grade active constituents needed to compound individualised formulas to tailor the medication to the strength and form that works best for veterinarians and their patients.
Dosage preparation forms include:

Ophthalmic preparations
Ophthalmic preparations are available in solutions, suspensions and ointments. We have a patented dropper bottle, designed to be made without preservatives. The sterile solution flows through a one-way valve preventing any contamination ingress. You can find out more about our dropper here.
Oral solutions, suspensions & pastes
The active ingredients in solutions are fully dissolved, with the concentration evenly distributed. A suspension is made when an active cannot be fully dissolved. The medication will need to be redistributed prior to use.
Otic Preparations
Otic preparations are available in solutions, suspensions, ointments and pluronic gel (see below).
Poloxamer (Pluronic gel)
This product is a thermo-reversible slow-release gel, also known as poloxamer. This product is a liquid when cold, and a highly viscous gel when at room temperature (or when in contact with the patient’s body).
Sterile Preparations
Bova follows strict guidelines when preparing sterile medications and has a dedicated positive pressure suite certified for sterile compounding.
Sterile formulations have a number of special requirements which we adhere to and they are prepared in the clean room by trained technicians and pharmacists.
Tablets
Tablets are available for a range of commonly used medications.
Transdermal preparations
Transdermal creams and gels are available for the delivery of many medications and may be dispensed in pre-loaded syringes and Topi click applicators. Find out more about our Topi click applicators here.
The science of compliance… flavours.
Which flavour animals prefer is determined in part by their natural diets. Domesticated animals and pets often acquire additional taste preferences as a result of living with their human caregivers.
Flavouring unpleasant medication to increase palatability and compliance is one of the primary ways Bova can reduce stress for both patients and owners.
